The permit was granted by resolution 40122 on February 13, 2026, and took effect on April 6, 2026, following the project’s registration in Colombia’s National Geothermal Registry. The milestone caps a process that began in 2023 and included more than two years of technical review, environmental documentation, and coordination with Colombia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy.

The Cóndor Paipa Project sits in one of the areas with the greatest geothermal potential in Colombia. The Servicio Geológico Colombiano (SGC), the national geological survey, has studied the area for more than thirty years — work that has produced valuable subsurface data and a solid technical foundation for exploration.
The geology is favorable: the resource sits relatively close to the surface, which could allow for shallower, more cost-efficient wells, and existing studies point to temperatures capable of supporting commercial power generation. The site also benefits from existing infrastructure. With the Termopaipa energy complex nearby, the region already has road access, transmission infrastructure, and an experienced local workforce, conditions that can support future geothermal development and help move the region toward a lower-carbon energy future.
Geothermal energy can provide continuous, weather-independent baseload power, complementing Colombia’s hydroelectric and solar resources and strengthening the national grid’s resilience against droughts and seasonal variability.
Beyond electricity generation, the Cóndor Paipa Project is built around a cascading-use model that seeks to extend the value of the geothermal resource into sectors such as agribusiness, tourism, hospitality, scientific research, and academic training. Through an interdisciplinary, community-centered approach, one that combines technical resource assessment, environmental management, and local engagement the project aims to generate long-term territorial value and help pave the way for future geothermal development across Colombia.
